Acumatica Dashboards are basically a canvas to which you can add 7 different kinds of widgets: Chart (Doughnut, Line, Column, Stacked Column, Bar, Stacked Bar, and Funnel), Data Table, Embedded Page, Power BI Tile, Scorecard KPI, Trend Card KPI, and Wiki Page. Although not as advanced as Power BI, the main advantage of Acumatica Dashboards is that you are working within the Acumatica application so all of the data is live. There are many creative ways to use the dashboard widgets and various things to consider when organizing the dashboards and rolling out security. Acumatica Pivot Tables give you a way to get Pivot Table functionality within the Acumatica application. Not only can you add them to the PIVOT TABLES menu on a Generic Inquiry, but you can also add them as standalone items on the main menu (Site Map). Acumatica Pivot Tables are nowhere near as sophisticated as Pivot Tables in Microsoft Excel, but the basics are there and it's nice to get some Pivot Table functionality within your web browser without having to open up Excel. Acumatica Analytical Report Manager is basically the Financial Report Writer in Acumatica. It really should just be called Acumatica Financial Report Writer, but someone decided to call it Analytical Report Manager instead. It's very similar to other financial report writers like FRx, but definitely not as robust overall. The nice thing though is that you do both the designing and consuming of reports within the Acumatica application, right in your web browser or on your mobile device.Topics: 18 | Posts: 84
Acumatica Report Designer is a Windows-based application (sorry, no Macs) that you use to design standard reports in Acumatica. Report Designer works best for reports that are going to be printed, especially forms like Checks, Invoices, Purchase Orders, etc. Even though you use a separate Windows-based application to design reports, the reports are still consumed by users within the Acumatica application using their web browser.Topics: 43 | Posts: 222
Acumatica Generic Inquiries are the foundation of the Acumatica reporting strategy. You need to build good Generic Inquiries so you have a solid foundation. Then you can build cool things on top of them like Reusable Filters, Entry Point, Dashboards, Navigation, Pivot Tables, and Excel / Power BI with OData. Also, Generic Inquiries are interactive, allowing a user to choose which columns to display and apply on-the-fly sorting and filtering.
Understanding the database schema or structure is critical to building good Generic Inquiries. However, currently Acumatica does not publish a schema guide or diagram (vote here if you'd like them to). You can also use this forum to discuss how to join tables together or where to go within the database to get various information.
Microsoft Excel and Power BI can connect directly and securely to Acumatica via OData without needing a SQL connection, a VPN, or a special firewall configuration. No additional software to install either. As long as you can access Acumatica, you can also access OData, regardless of which hosting option you are using (On-Prem, 3rd Party Hosting, or Acumatica SaaS). OData allows you to design your Dashboards and Reports in Microsoft Excel or Power BI once, then refresh them with up-to-date data by simply pressing the Refresh button. Starting in Excel 2016, the Power BI functionality is available out-of-the-box in Excel 2016. This makes Excel A LOT more powerful than it was, and it was already pretty powerful. And if you want to schedule the Excel data to be refreshed while you are sleeping so you don't have to do it manually, you can use an application called Power Update. Power BI is a newer tool from Microsoft that takes the strength of SQL Server Analysis Services, the world's most popular Midmarket data warehouse solution, and makes it available in three formats: 1. Power BI Desktop for designing Dashboards and Reports. Desktop applications are the best at "creating" things and Power BI Desktop is no exception. Then you can use the mobile and web browser apps to "consume" what you create. 2. PowerBI.com for "consuming" what you create using a web browser. 3. Power BI Mobile App (iOS and Android) for viewing mobile versions of your Dashboards and Reports. When designing in Power BI Desktop, you can specify two different layouts: one for web browsers and one for mobile so you can make things look nice on those small phone screens.Topics: 5 | Posts: 33
Velixo Reports is the open source creation of Acumatica veteran and programming genius Gabriel Michaud. Velixo Reports is an Excel Add-In and it basically gives you the ability to do what you can do in Acumatica Analytical Report Manager (ARM), but do it in Microsoft Excel.
